Essential Oils in Soap: Natural Fragrance, Clearly Explained

If you’ve ever wondered what we mean by “natural fragrance”, here’s the simple answer:

At The Good Soap, our natural fragrance comes from essential oils.
We don’t use artificial perfume or synthetic fragrance blends in our products.

This article explains what that means, how essential oils behave in soap, and what to choose if your skin prefers no scent at all.

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts taken from parts of the plant such as petals, leaves, bark, seeds, stems or roots. They carry the characteristic aroma of the plant they come from.

Because they’re concentrated, they must be used carefully and within cosmetic safety guidelines. I’m qualified in aromatherapy and all of our products are safety certified, which supports how we formulate and use essential oils responsibly.

Essential Oils Contain Naturally Occurring Allergens

This is an important point that many people don’t realise:

Even though essential oils are natural, they can contain naturally occurring allergens that some people may react to.

That’s why, by law, specific allergens must be listed on labels and on our website ingredient lists (you’ll see them at the end of the ingredients).

Why Some Soaps Smell Stronger Than Others

In cold process soap making, scent can behave differently depending on the essential oil used.

  • Some essential oils hold their scent well (peppermint is a good example).

  • Others can fade more during the soap-making process (citrus oils often soften).

Even when the scent becomes lighter, the soap is still made with the same carefully chosen oils and ingredients.

Why Our Moisturisers and Deodorants Can Smell Stronger

In leave-on products like moisturiser bars and deodorant bars, essential oils usually smell closer to how they do in the bottle because they haven’t gone through the soap-making process.

Some Ingredients Naturally Have Their Own Scent

Not all scent comes from essential oils.

Some natural ingredients have a naturally recognisable aroma, such as:

  • Cocoa butter (often chocolatey)

  • Shea butter (warm and nutty)

  • Coffee (when used as a liquid in soap)

Because we work with natural raw materials, you may notice small variations from batch to batch — even when our recipes stay the same.

Prefer No Fragrance at All?

Many customers love essential oil scents. Others prefer to avoid fragrance completely, especially if their skin is feeling reactive.

That’s why we also offer fragrance-free products, made without essential oils.

Our Approach in One Line

Essential oils are our natural fragrance.
No artificial perfume. Clear ingredients. Thoughtful formulation.

If you ever want help choosing between essential oil scented and fragrance-free products, we’re always happy to point you in the right direction.
